Work and Research

I am an interdisciplinary researcher who does not confine to one field. This is as a result of opportunities presented to me when I finished my bachelor's degree. I completed a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After graduating I became involved in a multi-country, European Union-funded research project which focused on access to healthcare services for people with disabilities. This is how I got into research. Although the topic wasn't related to my field, I grabbed the opportunity in front of me with willingness to learn. The project allowed me to start and complete a master's degree in Arts and to contribute to more academic publications followed by a PhD in Development Finance from Stellenbosch University and further publications in agricultural finance. My research focuses on a wide range of areas including agricultural finance, pedagogy, work place favouritism, disability and health issues and have published a number of papers, book chapters and book on these. A lot of my work now is focused on development. I try to study anything that makes a contribution to existing knowledge and can inform policy – especially development policies. I write about things that can make a difference on the ground and to the future. I’ll work on anything that has the potential to have an impact. For example, I recently wrote on education because I teach and there are issues I relate to. I spoke to my students to get their views on what they regard as good teaching and published a paper on conceptions of good teaching in higher education institutions. That doesn’t require me to have a degree in education. I practice it every day. This interdisciplinarity is what makes me stand out from my peers at similar career point.
